short film ‘Nancy, Sid and Sergio’ (2011)

cast : Charlie Cox, Johnny Harris, Emma Pierson

Wes, how did you feel playing Manolo as an old man?

Wes Bentley: Man, that was trippy. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done as an actor. It was very, very difficult. I don’t know if I pulled it off, but to do the physical work was hard enough. I know the makeup helped, but it was, “How is he going to move?”

And to do that, I not only had to apply basic physical things, but also emotional things to build his life up. it wasn’t just what you see in the film. Where are all the bad mistakes and or maybe good things that happened to him up until that point that would sit in him? So it was a lot of work. It was very difficult.

Charlie Cox: The first two weeks of filming is when they filmed that stuff, and so I wasn’t being used at all. I had to go on set one day for a costume fitting, and I was waiting to start filming. And I remember walking past this old, decrepit man on set. I was on my way to lunch.

And I remember thinking, “Why doesn’t someone bring this guy lunch? What’s he doing on set? Who is that guy?” And then he was like [he says in Bentley’s voice], “Hey, man.” It freaked me out. Do you remember that day?

Bentley: I do. I remember everything.

Cox: You were walking slowly as well. This is completely off the subject, but I’m going to tell it anyway. I did a similar thing in another film, “Casanova,” where I had to wear “old man” makeup. And I had to walk to set to show that director for the test. They made me look like I was 80.

I was with my best friend, and as we were walking to set, I was walking relatively fast, because I wanted to get it done and go home. And as I walked past this elderly couple, who were probably younger than I looked, I saw them looking at me funny. And as I walked past them, I did one of those hops and skips. You know when you jump and click your heels? I could see them thinking, “What vitamins is he taking?”
